NCAA Rule 8-4 (b)Force-Play Slide Rule

Definition of a Legal Slide:

A slide is legal if:

  1. The runner begins the slide before reaching the base;
  2. Is in reach of the base;
  3. Slides so that they can remain on the base;
  4. Does not change path to initiate contact;
  5. Does not raise leg or arm to interfere;
  6. Slides directly to the base.

Illegal Slide:

  • Slide not directly at the base.
  • Using arms or legs to initiate contact.
  • No actual slide at all — just running into the fielder.

Penalty:

  • Runner is out, and interference may lead to an automatic double play.
